Petition: Stop The Saudi Arabia-Led Attack On Yemen

Started on September 13, 2015. By Shireen AlAdeimi, Cambridge, MA.

“Yemen after five months looks like Syria after five years.” – Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross

Six months ago, Saudi Arabia launched a military campaign against Yemen, the Middle East’s poorest nation. With support from the United States, the Saudi-led coalition has conducted airstrikes that have claimed the lives of thousands of civilians, and has imposed an aerial and naval blockade that has prevented medical aid and food supplies from reaching the country. In a country that relies, almost exclusively, on imported food and medicine, millions are now at risk of starvation. In July, the United Nations declared its highest emergency level in Yemen – a Level 3 humanitarian emergency. More than two months later, Yemen’s humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.

The perpetrators of this war are many, but the only victims are the Yemeni people. The people of Yemen are not at war with the United States, Saudi Arabia, or any other foreign or local agent. However, since March 26th of this year, they have endured countless airstrikes on residential homes, factories, schools, aid offices and refugee camps. To date, airstrikes have killed more than 4,500 Yemenis, with an average of 30 deaths each day. Additionally, the Saudi-led coalition has already committed at least one war crime: the bombing of a residential area in Al-Mokha on July 24th, 2015 that killed at least 120 civilians and wounded dozens more.

Yemen has also witnessed a direct attack on its heritage. While the world has decried the recent destruction of ancient monuments in Syria and Iraq by ISIL, it has fallen silent upon Saudi Arabia’s leveling of a3000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage site in Sana’a, the repeated bombing of the ancient Great Dam of Marib, and other assaults on Yemen’s historical sites. Many more ancient sites and antiquities across Yemen remain in danger of being destroyed by the incessant and indiscriminate airstrikes.

While the victims are innocent Yemeni civilians, terrorist groups have continued to expand in Yemen, unchallenged, under the cover of the very airstrikes that are targeting them elsewhere in the Middle East yet ignoring them in Yemen.

We are appealing to President Obama, the United States Senate, and the United States House of Representatives to:

  1. Actively voice your opposition to the brutal Saudi-led aggression against Yemeni civilians
  2. Actively call for an end to the aerial and naval blockade imposed on Yemen by the Saudi-led coalition
  3. Work to end the United States’ support of the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen (e.g. intelligence-sharing, supply of weapons, etc.)
  4. Work to protect Yemeni civilians by passing the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act

When a friend first emailed me a link to the article by J.K.
