BEIRUT: Syria’s al Qaeda affiliate Nusra Front abducted five more rebels believed to have been trained by the United States after raiding areas along the Turkish border in the past 24 hours, a war monitoring group said on Tuesday.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the militant group was now holding a total of 13 men from “Division 30”, a Syrian rebel unit that includes some fighters recently trained by the U.S. military. It was not immediately clear whether the five men abducted overnight had been on the new U.S. military training programme or on an existing, separate CIA-led programme.

On Friday, Nusra Front said in a statement it had detained a number of Syrian rebels trained by the United States and warned any others they should abandon the programme. But the Pentagon said at the time that no members of an initial group of around 60 U.S.-trained rebels had been abducted. The U.S. military launched a programme in May to train up to 5,400 fighters a year in what was seen as a test of Obama’s strategy of getting local partners to combat the hardline Islamic State group in Syria.

The training programme has been challenged from the start, with many candidates being declared ineligible and some even dropping out. On Monday, U.S. officials said one member of this new Syrian force was believed to have been killed in clashes last week with Nusra Front. The al Qaeda wing attacked a rebel compound near Azaz town in Syria on Friday, triggering the first U.S. air strikes to support members of the new Syrian force.

The Observatory, which tracks violence across the country, said at least five members of Division 30 were killed in the clashes that also left at least 25 Nusra Front fighters dead and wounded scores.

  • The May 18-21 festival appeared to be a Saudi charm offensive aimed at federal policy makers as the Trudeau government fields questions about its decision to grant export permits for the armoured vehicles to a country that U.S. watchdog Freedom House regularly ranks among “the worst of the worst” on human rights. The Saudi embassy blamed “logistical reasons” for its last-minute change of plans when contacted Monday and a spokesperson said the country’s decision was not motivated by fear of protesters. Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion’s office had already said he would not be attending the “Saudi Cultural Days in Canada.” The embassy was adamant the event “had nothing to do” with the $15-billion arms deal and said it had been planned for years. Canada’s Department of Global Affairs, however, said it was notified of the “Cultural Days” on Jan. 14. That date was nearly two weeks after mass executions in Saudi Arabia drew public condemnation from the Trudeau government.

  • The Liberals are on the defensive after court documents released earlier this month revealed that Mr. Dion, not Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, signed the export permits to allow seventy-percent (70%) of the transaction to ship to Saudi Arabia. Many observers had assumed the Conservatives had granted export permits when they signed the deal. trudeau speaking"The Liberal signature on the export permits means that the Liberal government has taken full ownership of a decision to sell arms to a country notorious for human-rights abuses.
